OGL Construction was appointed as Principal Contractor by the North York Moors National Park Authority to refurbish and redevelop The Old Printworks in Helmsley, transforming the existing site into a modern operational depot for the North York Moors Ranger Service.
The project involved the comprehensive refurbishment of the existing workshops, stores and garage facilities, together with significant upgrades to the surrounding external areas and associated mechanical and electrical installations. The completed development provides a dedicated operational base for the Ranger team, which is responsible for maintaining more than 2,300km of Rights of Way throughout the National Park.
A key element of the project was extending the life of the existing building rather than replacing it. Dilapidated cladding was removed and remedial works undertaken to the retained structural steel frame, alongside new structural steelwork, slab repairs and associated improvements to the existing building fabric.
The building envelope was comprehensively upgraded with new insulated wall and roof cladding systems, improving the appearance, durability and thermal performance of the facility. The internal accommodation was also refurbished and fitted out to provide practical workshop, storage and operational spaces for the Ranger Service.
OGL coordinated the structural alterations, building envelope, internal fit-out, mechanical and electrical installations and external works while managing the overall construction programme and site delivery.
Completed in May 2026, the redevelopment has transformed an ageing facility into a durable and efficient operational depot supporting the continued maintenance, conservation and accessibility of the North York Moors National Park.
